SAFE & WELCOME
WELCOME
Welcome to BC3! In my role as Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, I am responsible for supporting the administration of both the resources put in place to encourage student success and wellness, and the policies that ensure a safe and welcoming campus community.
I need your help. It is important for new students to understand your role as a member of this vibrant learning community AND commit to being a positive contributor.
Now, more than ever, we are striving to make our campus a safe and healthy space where students can engage in meaningful academic and extracurricular activities that will prepare them for a lifetime of productive engagement in the world.
How do we do this?
By working together as a community to create a campus environment welcoming for ALL, and free from hate, discrimination and violence.
By striving to support each other through challenging personal or academic times, and making appropriate referrals to campus resources when we see that a peer may need support or encouragement.
By taking responsibility to support the collective health and wellness of our campus community through the adherence to college safety policies.
And, in an era of rapidly increasing AI advancements, by demonstrating integrity in your academic pursuits.
and enrollment MANAGEMENT
As you begin your journey as a Pioneer, I am excited to welcome you into this community. I personally challenge you do your part to continue to make BC3 a place where we all feel supported to learn and grow as we strive to achieve our goals.
Go Pioneers!
Dr. Joshua Novak, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management
and enrollment MANAGEMENT
The Academic Catalog is your guide to the policies applicable and resources available to you as a BC3 student. You will find details about a variety of topics covered in the catalog, including:
- College Academic Information and Policies
- Campus and Classroom Expectations
- Student Services and Resources
- Safety and Security Information
- Registration, Financial Aid and Academic Policies and Resources
In addition, this guide also articulates important policies designed to promote a safe and secure campus that emphasizes learning and personal growth, including:
- Policies on Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use
- Policies and Resources for Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, and Sexual Assault
- Policies related to the use of Campus Technology
Finally, this document is home to the Student Code of Conduct, which further outlines our expectations of your conduct while enrolled as a BC3 student, and how any violations of college expectations are responded to. Read the Student Code of Conduct –>
BEFORE you begin classes this semester, it is essential that you review and understand both the expectations of the college for your conduct and the many resources available you. Review the Academic Catalog –>
Our goals are to help you develop and grow personally, intellectually and professionally during your time here. For that to occur, we place a strong focus on Academic Integrity as a core value for students.
What is Academic Integrity? Essentially, it means conscientiously submitting your own original work for each assignment, in each class, and following the expectations of the college and individual faculty by:
- Not using unauthorized references, including referencing from other students, during exams or assignments
- Not possessing, purchasing or selling content, including exams
- Not acting as substitutes for other students, or using others as substitutes for yourself
- Not using aid in a manner expressly prohibited by the instructor in the research, preparation, creating, writing, or performing of work to be submitted for academic credit or evaluation.
- Not properly citing your work
- Not plagiarizing. Plagiarism is presenting someone (or something) else’s work as one’s own, a serious offense in academic and professional environments. Plagiarism includes purchasing or borrowing an entire assignment, having someone else complete an assignment or rewrite an assignment in his/her words, and using source material to complete an assignment without giving proper credit for that source material. It also includes the unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence platforms for any assigned or graded work.
NOT following these guidelines can result in failing grades for assignment on your first offense, and could result in your permanent dismissal from BC3 for any following offenses.
Commit to learning, especially when it is difficult. Act with integrity!
You can find additional information on Academic Integrity and processes for reporting and resolving potential violations in our Academic Catalog. Additionally, be sure to review each course syllabus on Day 1 to understand individual faculty expectations.
BC3 is committed to working together to provide a safe, secure, and healthy teaching, learning and working environment free from discrimination and violence. Our goal is to make you more aware of sexual assault and steps for prevention. Below is information regarding Title IX, the college policies in relation to harassment and discrimination, and the educational and support resources provided to members of our campus community.
What is Title IX? Title IX is a federal law that states, “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX protects students, faculty, staff, administration, and visitors from sexual harassment and sexual assault, which are forms of discrimination covered by the college’s Nondiscrimination Policy. The policy provides information and resources in relation to the college’s commitment to maintaining a campus free from discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct. Review BC3’s Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct Policy and Resources –>
How to Report Violations of Title IX
- Report online (confidential and can be anonymous) -> BC3 Online Incident Report Form
- Report the potential violation directly to the Title IX Coordinator -> Christina Fleeger, Executive Director of Human Resources/ Equal Opportunity Compliance Officer
- Report the potential violation to BC3 Campus Police ->
- Report the potential violation to the Dean of Students –>
Resources and Support Once potential discrimination, harassment, or assault is reported, BC3 will take immediate action to stop the reported violation, to address its effects, and to prevent its re-occurrence.
We do this by providing a variety of informal methods of support and remediation, while also providing formal options for filing and addressing a complaint, including support for filing concerns with applicable law enforcement agencies when appropriate.
We have listed a few examples of possible supportive measures below. More information can be found starting on page 74 of the 2023 Annual Safety and Security Report. Supportive measures are available even if an individual chooses not to file a formal complaint or chooses not to report to Campus Police.
Possible supportive measures include:
- Campus-based supports such as class adjustments, escort services, “no contact” directives, or mediation between parties (where appropriate)
- Support in filing a formal report, including filing with appropriate legal authorities
- Support in navigating the formal hearing process
- Referrals to local support agencies such as VOICe (Victims Outreach Intervention Center)
- Referrals to counseling or support agencies
- Other resources or support as needed
Campus Police
BC3 offers its campus community a fully sworn police force, along with armed security officers to assist in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. BC3’s Campus police officers are on staff to assist students by responding to violations of law, by supporting students in crisis, and by being available during emergency situations.
BC3 Campus Police officers receive ongoing training on-campus threat response and are instrumental members of the campuses’ early prevention teams, such as the CARE, Title IX, and Campus Safety teams. They receive training to assist the specific needs of a college campus community and regularly participate in campus training on student wellness, campus diversity and equity, and student support. They are also responsible for coordinating and enforcing BC3 parking regulations.
Our Campus Police also offer training to the BC3 community including ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Training. This nationally recognized training provides preparation and a plan for individuals and organizations on how to more proactively handle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter event. ALICE training is regularly offered to campus groups and is available for students, faculty, and staff.
In any Campus Emergency -> Dial 911. If it is after hours or officers are not on duty, calls will be dispatched to the location-based police services.
The CARE Team: BC3’s C.A.R.E. (Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation) Team is a group of individuals who are trained and organized to support students who may be at risk of harming themselves or someone else. Our team works through referrals of concern from any member of the campus community, and works to confidentially intervene and make appropriate referrals for safety and support.
It is essential that BC3 students become advocates for this resource as they can refer students of concern directly and can guide fellow students to the CARE team.
Examples of behaviors that should be reported to the CARE Team include:
- Unusual or erratic behavior, including those observed through online posts
- Extended absence or disengagement from class or campus engagement
- Written work or posts with troubling themes or references
- Written, verbal or posted expressions of intent to harm oneself or others
- Other actions which cause significant alarm or raise safety concerns
- Concern for the general wellbeing of an individual
The CARE Team is NOT an Emergency Service. All campus or student emergencies should be referred to the Campus Police Department or call 9-1-1. Follow-up with the CARE Team after the emergency is resolved may be appropriate.
To report a concern, contact the CARE Team -> Or submit an Online CONCERN form ->
